Why RFID?

Radio Frequency Identification has been in use since the 1940's. It's greatest benefit is that it does not require line-of-sight in order to function. In other words, a RFID tag can be read through all materials with the exception of metal without being seen. If packaged correctly, a RFID tag can be attached directly to a work of art and need not be removed. Essentially the use of RFID diminishes the need to move a work of art in order to identify it.

The RFID tags packaged by Washi Wrap, when combined with Northern Apex's ARTiFACT TRACTM, have the ability to store data. For instance a work's accession number, artist, title, date of last movement, room location, shelf location and identity of person that last moved the work, can be stored directly on the tag.

RFID allows for the use of a hand-held reader to record location moves of artworks as they happen, throughout the day. At the end of the day, the hand-held is docked and all location moves made that day are uploaded to an existing database, providing uniform and accurate data. The handheld can be utilized to streamline the inventory process, eliminating the need for a paper log and reducing the amount of movement necessary to identify a work.

The correct use of the technology in a museum setting, increases accuracy of record keeping, streamlines the inventory process and reduces the unnecessary movement of works in the collection.
